STD Testing Q & A

What is a sexually transmitted disease (STD)?

A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is an infection typically spread through oral, vaginal, or anal sexual contact. There are more than 30 types of STDs.

Common STDs Include:

  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Hepatitis B
  • Genital herpes
  • HIV
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Some STDs can also spread through blood contact or be passed during pregnancy and childbirth.

What are the symptoms of an STD?

Many STDs have no symptoms, especially in early stages. When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Vaginal pain
  • Itching or irritation
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Fever
  • Bumps, warts, or growths in the genital area

If you notice any of these symptoms—or have been exposed to an STD—testing is essential.

Who needs STD testing?

All women should consider STD testing if they suspect infection or have risk factors.

You May Need Testing If You:

  • Are sexually active under age 25 (annual testing recommended)
  • Have multiple or new partners
  • Have unprotected sex
  • Are pregnant (testing recommended during pregnancy)
  • Have a partner who tested positive for an STD

STD testing is often included as part of your annual well-woman exam.

How does STD testing work?

STD testing is quick, simple, and often painless. Depending on the test, your provider may collect:

  • Blood sample
  • Urine sample
  • Vaginal swab
  • Throat or rectal swab
  • Cervical sample (during a Pap smear)

Samples are sent to a lab, and you are contacted with results. If positive, treatment may include antibiotics or antiviral medications.

Early testing and treatment help prevent complications and protect your long-term health.
